Local Yuma Resident Hailed as Hero

One Yuma resident is being hailed as a hero for saving the life of his neighbor.

Armando Corona received the Yuma Fire Department's Lifesaving Award and a Chief's coin from Fire Chief Steve Irr at Wednesday's Yuma City Council meeting for performing CPR on his neighbor, 49-year-old Dan Lomax, when Lomax went into cardiac arrest.

It was back on August 15th of this year when Lomax went into cardiac arrest right after returning home from work. When Lomax became unresponsive, his wife, Jody Lomax, called 911. Meanhile, her mother, Donna Bodin, who was visiting from out of town, ran to get help from a neighbor.

That's when Corona, who had previsouly received CPR training and had recently completed a refresher course, came to the rescue.

He rushed over to the house and immediately began CPR chest compression on Lomax. He did that till paramedics arrived. Lomax was treated, taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center and released a week later. He's expected to make a full recovery.

Several of Corona's friends and family members, as well as the YFD personnel who responded that day, were at the Council meeting to thank him. YFD is stressing that things could've gone a lot differently that day had the collapse not been witnessed, 911 not been dialed and CPR not performed right away. For every minute a person in cardiac arrest is not receiving CPR, their chances of survival drop by 10 percent.

YFD does provide CPR training so for more information on their classes, just contact them at (928) 373-4855.
