Flu Season Underway; No Cases Diagnosed Locally So Far

KAWC
Yuma County Department of Public Health

Flu season is underway, but so far no officially diagnosed cases have been reported in Yuma County.  That information coming from Kathy Ward, Nursing Supervisor for the Yuma County Public Health Services District.

Ward says while there have been no “official” cases yet, it’s impossible to predict how bad the flu season is going to be until it hits. Ward says despite what residents might've heard, it's not possible to get the flu from the shot.

She adds that if someone is coming down with it, they should see the doctor to prevent complications.

Ward says the Public Health Services District urges everyone over six months old to get the flu shot, especially those who are very young, very old, or have a compromised immune system.

Ward adds a flu shot is vitally important for one more group: pregnant women.

Yuma County offers flu shots at the County Health Department.  Ward says around 80,000 people in the U.S. died from the flu last year.
