Local Author's Fictional Look at a Yuma Army Pilot

Michelle Faust

Chuck Wullenjohn released his book, Decision on Corregidor this year.  It is the story of a young pilot from Yuma who joins up just before the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.  He finds himself stationed in the Philippines, where U.S. and Filipino soldiers find themselves facing an enemy that is more prepared and ready for battle than some cared to admit at the time.  The novel follows young Ed Bannon’s attempts to scrape by after an attack by the Japanese leaves him and his fellow soldiers struggling not just to fight a war but to eat.  KAWC asked Wullenjohn why he was drawn to this story set against the backdrop of what became the greatest military defeat of the U.S. Army in military history.

Lou grew up in Tucson and has a long family history in the state of Arizona. He began his public radio career in 1988 at KNAU in Flagstaff as a classical music DJ and has been hooked on public radio since, transitioning to news after trying his hand at several other careers in publishing and commercial broadcasting. Lou has a degree in American Studies from Arizona State University and was KAWC's Morning Edition host for two and half years before becoming News and Operations Director.
