For 25 years, local non-profit agencies have been celebrating farmworkers with an annual event in San Luis that’s a one stop shop for health and social services.
The Dia Del Campesino, or Day of the Farmworker will be held Dec. 7 at Joe Orduño Park. It’s grown to serve more than 3,000 farmworkers who come for health screenings, donated clothing and a warm meal.
It’s starting earlier than usual this year, from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. as many farmworkers are already heading to the fields by 3 or 4 a.m. Organizers say the most popular parts of the event are the medical services including flu shots and the free clothing.

“This is an event to thank farmworkers for all the work they have done throughout the year," Godinez said. "The main purpose of this event is to bring the services closer to them.”
As of now, there are more than 30 community agencies participating. Other services are scheduled to include glucose exams, blood pressure, body mass and cholesterol exams. Information will be offered for employment services, health and nutrition, immigration, legal services, mortgage and bankruptcy.
There will be raffles for bicycles and other donated goods and services.
Food will include menudo and Mexican hot chocolate.
Los Del Llano, a Mexican Norteño band, will be performing.
The City of San Luis is providing shuttles from Chase Bank to the event.
