Many parents will argue it is never too early to start preparing their children for college.
That is why, for the tenth year in a row, Arizona Western College will be having fifth-grade students on the Yuma campus. It'll be a group of around 150 kids from Otondo Elementary School.
It's all part of the "I’m Going to College" event where the kids will get to experience a day as a college student.
The event will be on Thursday, Nov. 14, when they will start off the morning with a mock orientation before participating in three mini college classes.
Students will finish out the day with an achievement ceremony. They will also receive T-shirts with the year they are expected to complete their bachelor’s degree.
Activities will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Schoening Conference Center on 2020 S. Ave. 8E. The mock graduation ceremony will be held at 12:40 p.m., with the programing concluding at 1:30 p.m.
AWC has been inviting elementary-age students to campus for the past decade to inspire them to consider higher education and to create a college-going culture in Yuma County.
Over 2,460 students have come through the program.
