It has been a tough time for media outlets over the last few years, as charges of media bias and “fake news” have taken a toll on the public’s trust in reporting.
Employees of local print, radio, and television news services have also found themselves the subjects of threats, intimidation, stalking, harassing communications, bullying and physical assault. The shooting at a Maryland newspaper shocked us all, and made us aware of just how much the landscape has changed. Local news organizations, many for the first time, must reassess the security of their facilities and evaluate procedures they use to keep employees safe when they are in the field.
Our goal moving forward is to work together – TV, radio and print – to strengthen trust in local, professional journalism and improve the connection between local media and the community.

John Courtis, Executive Director of the Greater Yuma Chamber of Commerce, will moderate this lively discussion about editorial standards, the challenges and joys of covering our diverse and sometimes misunderstood community, and what you, as a community member, want most from your local news teams.
