Prescription drugs have for a while now been at the forefront of the opioid epidemic. That is why both the Yuma Police Department and the Yuma County Sheriff's Office will be collecting unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday, Oct. 26.
It's all part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back - a nationwide initiative meant to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Yuma residents can drop off unwanted prescription drugs at the YCSO Foothills Substation on 13190 E. South Frontage Road, the Yuma Police Department on 1500 S. 1st Ave., the Fry's on 500 W. 24th St. or the Walmart on 2501 S. Ave. B.
The event provides a safe, convenient, and anonymous way for customers to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs.
Last April, more than 4,900 federal, state and local law enforcement agencis took in more than 468 tons of unused, expired or unwanted prescription drugs.
