Fifteen years ago, 14 undocumented migrants were found dead from exposure along the U.S./Mexico border near Yuma. In response, Yuma Sector Border Patrol developed emergency beacons for migrants in distress. Pronghorn once roamed North America by the millions, but human activity fragmented the species into four distinctive types, one of which makes its home in the desert Southwest.

The Sonoran pronghorn is light, fast and adapted for life in the desert, but just over a decade ago they were all but wiped out due to a severe drought. Now, efforts to help the endangered animal make a comeback are proving successful.

Arizona Edition - You’d be forgiven if you thought apprehending illegal border-crossers in the Yuma Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol along the U.S.-Mexico border is primarily a desert operation.  As you’ll hear in a moment, that is a big part of it, but the Colorado River for some immigrants seems a faster, and perhaps cooler, option for sneaking into the U.S., especially in the summer.  But the Border Patrol says the river can be deadly, so they train for every possibility.  KAWC’s Stephanie Sanchez reports…(originally aired 06/25/14).
