HSOY Halts Spay and Neuter Program Amid Staffing Shortage

Those looking to have their dogs or cats spayed or neutered in Yuma will have to turn to a local veterinary clinic. That also goes for animal vaccinations as well.

The Humane Society of Yuma announced Tuesday it has closed both its low-cost spay and neuter program and all low-cost vaccination clinics.

“The Humane Society of Yuma is fully aware that there is a high demand for low-cost veterinary services in our community," said Annette Lagunas, Executive Director at the HSOY. "Unfortunately, we are currently lacking the qualified staffing resources to provide veterinary services for both owned pets and shelter animals."

All appointments for the spay and neuter program through the remaining month of Aug. and Sept. have been canceled. If spots are to open for surgery, HSOY says it will contact names on the list, but suggests scheduling appointments with local veterinary clinics.

All low-cost vaccination appointments after Sept. 4 are canceled.

"This is an unfortunate situation, and we are working hard to get our clinic up and running. However, to continue to work towards our mission, it is imperative that those resources are being utilized for the backlog of surgeries for animals in our care in order to place them in forever homes," Lagunas said.

There are currently over 500 animals in foster care or foster to adopt with the HSOY.
