Carmen Duarte is a reporter for the Arizona Daily Star newspaper in Tucson, Arizona. She is the author of Mama’s Santos: An Arizona Life. It first ran as a 36-part series in the newspaper, telling the stories of her mother’s childhood in the fields, her grandparents emigrating from Mexico, the beginnings of the immigration debate, and the supernatural and spiritual culture of her ancestors. When the series was first published in 2000, Duarte says she got hundreds of letters from those who saw their own families in the history behind Mama’s Santos. She speaks to KAWC’s Maya Springhawk Robnett about the book and the history behind it.
