An Inside Look at YPG with Col. Ross Poppenberger

Arizona Edition Live

Show Number 39

The U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground is a source of pride for people who live in southwestern Arizona.  It’s main mission – support the U.S. military (and sometimes military from other nations) by making sure the equipment it uses, everything from clothing to flashlights, vehicles and weapons, are effective and safe to use. But that is far from all that happens at the busy facility.

On this episode of Arizona Edition Live, KAWC’s Lou Gum speaks with YPG leader Col. Ross Poppenberger, who says he has his dream job.

From upcoming construction on U.S. 95 to a spate of projects on tap thanks to new Army initiatives, Col. Poppenberger provides insight into what it’s like to manage one of the premier military installations in the country.

He also talks abouts how residents can get an inside look at YPG this winter and about the lessons learned from last year’s YPG open house.

Arizona Edition Live airs every Friday at 9:00 a.m. on KAWC 88.9 FM and KAWC.org. It rebroadcasts Saturday mornings at 11:00 a.m.

Lou grew up in Tucson and has a long family history in the state of Arizona. He began his public radio career in 1988 at KNAU in Flagstaff as a classical music DJ and has been hooked on public radio since, transitioning to news after trying his hand at several other careers in publishing and commercial broadcasting. Lou has a degree in American Studies from Arizona State University and was KAWC's Morning Edition host for two and half years before becoming News and Operations Director.
