In California, activists and environmentalists are seeking to halt construction of a new $500 million rail yard next to the Port of Los Angeles. Activists say the massive project would mean even more pollution for nearby neighborhoods that already have some of the worst air in the country.

Amid Data Controversy, NSA Builds Its Biggest Data Farm

Confessed NSA Leaker Holed Up In Hong Kong Hotel
The Guardian has identified its source for a series of reports it published in recent days on secret U.S. surveillance activity. The paper says the source is Edward Snowden, a former technical assistant for the CIA who now works for a private-sector defense and technology consulting firm.

China Experiences Slow Economic Growth
Chinese exports grew by only 1 percent in May — the lowest rate in almost a year. Weak exports to the U.S. and Europe are the main culprits. And imports of the raw materials that fuel China's economy, such as copper and coal are also down.

The novel is about two sisters, aged 12 and 15, who travel cross-country after their mother abandons them. Reviewer Meg Wolitzer says that not only the characters are adrift in this book, the story itself seems unsure of what it wants to be.

Snowden, 29, says he was a mediocre student but that his computer skills landed him a job with the CIA. It was there, he says, that he became convinced that surveillance programs are violating Americans' rights to privacy. Now, he's stepped forward to say he leaked secrets about those programs.
Trayvon Martin Killing: 2 Sides Want Very Different Jurors
The trial gets started Monday in Florida. George Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder. Experts say prosecutors will look for young jurors, while the defense will focus on older people. Trayvon's death sparked protests and a national discussion about race relations.
