Construction has been said to be one of the greatest stimulants of the mind and proponents of the creative process. That is exactly what YUHSD students were exposed to at the first-ever district construction competition.
It happened on Friday, Oct. 25, at San Luis High School.
More than 50 students from San Luis, Kofa and Yuma High competed with construction teachers (Casus, Brad Graham and Terry Hurt) and other industry professionals who were overseeing the event.
The event consisted of numerous activities, all centered on showcasing the Career & Technical Education construction programs. The event was also intended as a way for CTE students to prepare for next semester’s regional SkillsUSA competition, held every year at Arizona Western College.
“I want to thank my fellow construction colleagues, along with our instructional leaders that all helped make it possible for our students to engage in a hands-on learning environment including the ‘knowledge bowl quiz,’” said San Luis High School construction teacher Lawrence Casaus.
Competitors were required to complete tool-specific tasks, layout, a written examination, and other industry-based work.
Moving forward, the district intends to hold the competition every year in the fall.
