The Yuma Union High School District awarded Vista High School with the top ‘safety committee award’ for the third year in a row.
Receiving honors right behind Vista High is Gila Ridge, which is also recognized for having top safety committee accreditation.
Both schools were presented with $8,300 checks.
“We discuss safety concerns openly and we believe that when we work together our actions can create a healthier and safer school community,” said Vista High School Principal Brett Surguine.
But both schools aren’t the only ones receiving funds, in fact, all six schools in the district are getting a portion of funds, according to YUHSD.
Kofa High School which shared the top spot in 2019 received $5,700. Cibola High School received $4,300. San Luis High School received $4,200. Yuma High School received $3,900.
The award money was approved during the district’s board meeting and comes from board-approved insurance proceeds.
Now the committees at each school will propose three ways to spend the funds. Students and faculty will have the final vote on how the money will be spent throughout the school.
Each school’s safety committee is responsible for inspecting the campus’s buildings and equipment for any hazards or safety concerns.
