PHOENIX — Good news for holiday travelers: The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced that there will be no major closures on state highways this Memorial Day weekend.
From Friday afternoon, May 23, through late Monday night, May 26, all state highways — including those in the Phoenix metro area — will remain open, with no scheduled construction or maintenance shutdowns.
While freeways are staying open, ADOT is reminding drivers to remain vigilant and safe, particularly during high-traffic periods on Friday and Monday afternoons. Travelers should still expect slowdowns in existing work zones, including the active construction area along I-17 between Anthem Way and Sunset Point north of Phoenix.
Drivers are also encouraged to be ready for unexpected closures caused by accidents, breakdowns, or natural events like wildfires. To help avoid being caught off guard, ADOT recommends preparing a vehicle emergency kit with items such as:
- Extra drinking water
- Blankets
- A first-aid kit
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Fully charged cellphone and charger
- Snacks
- Prescription medications
- Diapers, if needed
- A small tool kit
- Hat, sunglasses, and an umbrella
ADOT also advises travelers to check their vehicles — especially tire pressure and fluid levels — before hitting the road. Fatigue, distractions, and impaired driving pose serious risks, so motorists are urged to rest well, stay focused, and arrange for a sober ride if necessary.
For those towing trailers, make sure safety chains are properly secured to prevent sparks that could ignite wildfires. Also, avoid parking in areas with dry brush or grass.
Travelers should stay informed about real-time road conditions through ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the AZ511 mobile app, or by calling 511. Updates are also available via ADOT’s X (formerly Twitter) account, @ArizonaDOT.
As the summer travel season begins, ADOT’s message is clear: Be safe, be prepared, and enjoy the holiday weekend.
