Former U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake has joined several current or former Arizona Republicans in endorsing former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden for President over Donald Trump.
In a released statement Flake, who served in the U.S. Senate from 2013 to 2019 and in the U.S. House of Representatives before that, said he is still a Republican. He said “I was a Republican long before the president ever called himself one, and I will be a Republican long after identifying as such is no longer useful to him.”
Flake went on to say Trump is not a true conservative and has tarnished the party with his conduct. He said he believes Biden can serve the country better as president than Trump.
Flake said "it is because of my conservatism, and because of my belief in the Constitution and in the separation of power and because I am gravely concerned about the conduct and behavior of our current president that I stand here today – proudly and wholeheartedly - to endorse Joe Biden to be our next president of the United States of America."
The Democratic National Convention was held last week. The Republican National Convention will be held today through Thursday.
