San Luis Rio Colorado Mayor on Refugees: We Must Care For Our Neighbors

Moises Castillo / AP
A group of Central American migrants cross the Suchiate River aboard a raft, on the the border between Guatemala and Mexico, in Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico on Saturday.

With a caravan of migrant refugees traveling north in Mexico towards the U.S. southern border, leaders on both sides are monitoring the situation. Some refugees have traveled through Yuma County before moving to sponsors in other cities. In San Luis Rio Colorado, new Mayor Santos Gonzalez Yescas shared his thoughts on the issue with KAWC.

Gonzalez Yescas joined with the mayors of Yuma, Somerton, Wellton and San Luis, Arizona on Saturday for an annual binational bike ride.

Gonzalez Yescas  said he is monitoring the refugees as they travel north through Mexico. The newly elected mayor says he expects some of the group to make their way to his city.

"We're going to coordinate with state officials and with federal authorities to welcome them," Gonzalez Yescas said. "This is a global issue and a socioeconomic one in Honduras and other countries."

"We're going to help them in any way we can because they're our Latin American brothers and sisters," he said.
