McSally Introduces Bill to Help Prevent Mass Shootings

U.S. Senator Martha McSally joined forces with a series of other senators to introduce a bill aimed at reducing and preventing future mass shootings.

The RESPONSE Act stands for Restoring, Enhancing, Strengthening, and Promoting Our Nation’s Safety Efforts and contains a series of provisions to reduce mass violence and make communities safer.

“The mass shootings that have taken place across our country are heartbreaking,” said Sen. McSally. “We can and should do more to prevent these awful tragedies. The RESPONSE Act would give law enforcement additional resources to identify potentially dangerous people, improve access to mental health treatment for those who need it, and make our schools safer.”

The newly-introduced bill would help prevent future attacks by addressing three different areas.

First, it would expand the tools available to law enforcement by encouraging internet service providers to collaborate with police as well as prosecuting illegal firearms dealers and expediting the death penalty for terrorist mass violence.

Second, the bill would also bolster the resources available for mental health treatment with things like increasing access to mental health treatment and crisis intervention teams.

Finally, the RESPONSE Act would invest in school safety for students and teachers by, for instance, incentivizing school internet safety and increasing access to active shooter training.
