October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Hoover Dam showed it on Monday.

To bring awareness to the impacts of domestic violence the Bureau of Reclamation lit the dam purple from 6- 10 pm Monday night.

Hours at the nearby Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge plaza will also be extended for public viewing.  Len Schilling, Manager of the Bureau of Reclamation’s Lower Colorado Dams Office says more than 100 people gathered there to view the lighting.

Also on hand Monday were officials from local and statewide organizations including: SafeNest, S.A.F.E. House, The Rape Crisis Center, Safe Embrace, Tu Casa Latina, Domestic Violence Resource Center, Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services, The Shade Tree, and the statewide Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence.

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is physically, sexually, emotionally, economically, or psychologically threatening to another person.

The National Network to End Domestic Violence says one in three women nationwide are affected.  7.9 million women are raped, assaulted and or stalked by a current or former partner each year.

If you are the victim of domestic violence help is available.  Call 800.656.HOPE (4673) to be connected with a trained staff member near you.
