YUHSD To Host Fall Sports Without Fans

Yuma Union High School District

Parents and fans of Yuma Union High School District athletics won't be able to attend any scheduled sporting events this Fall in efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, according to the district.

However, if cases of the virus continue in its downward trajectory it could be re-evaluated in the future by all the parties; YUHSD, the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), and the Yuma County Health District.

“It is heartbreaking, especially for those seniors who are entering their final season of competition. However, we have a responsibility to the community to lead by example," said "Tim Brienza, YUHSD associate Superintendent. " this time, hosting events with a large gathering of spectators would unnecessarily put our county at risk for reversing a downward trend of positive cases.”

In the meantime, parents and Criminal fans can watch select games available via live streaming, however, it is unclear if that will be provided by the district. Some select games will also be broadcasted on KAWC following a recent partnership. The schedule for the live stream and broadcast has not been released yet.

Phase one practice starts Aug. 24 for YUHSD students. Fall sports which include golf started last week. Cross country starts Monday, Sept. 21. Swim, volleyball, and football will start in October.
