Daniel Hernandez, Democratic candidate for Congress, speaks with Yuma Councilwoman Karen Watts, right, and an unidentified woman at Cafecito in Yuma on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

A candidate for Congress was in Yuma County this past weekend. Daniel Hernandez is one of 11 candidates and one of five Democrats in the race for Congressional District 7, which includes south Yuma County.

Hernandez is a former state representative and he was an intern for former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords when she and others were shot at a public event in Tucson in 2011. He met with Yuma city councilwomen Karen Watts and Carol Smith and local voters at Cafecito in Yuma last weekend.

Hernandez said it was nice to be back in Yuma, where he last visited before the general election this past November.

"The biggest thing I’m hearing about is cost of living," Hernandez said. "The tariffs being proposed by Trump are going to hurt Yuma County... so how do we reduce costs? How do we save Medicaid and Medicare?"

The primary election is set for July 15 with the general election on Sept. 23.

Hernandez is one of five Democrats running. The others are Adelita Grijalva, Deja Foxx, Patrick Harris and Jose Malvido.
