Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop-elect James Misko as the next bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, diocesan officials announced Monday.
The Diocese of Tucson includes Yuma and La Paz counties.
Father Misko currently serves as vicar general and moderator of the curia for the Diocese of Austin, Texas.
Misko met with diocese staff, parishioners and reporters Monday in Tucson. He also celebrated Mass at St. Augustine Cathedral.
Bishop-elect Misko, who is 55 years old, succeeds Archbishop Edward Weisenburger who was appointed from Tucson to the Archdiocese of Detroit in March.
Bishop Gerald Kicanas will continue to serve as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Tucson until Bishop-elect Misko’s ordination and installation on Feb. 20.
