Members of Arizona Western College’s esports team held a grand opening on Thursday for their arena on the main Yuma campus.

Esports describes the world of competitive, organized video gaming.

AWC esports head coach AJ Buchtel said there are 10 students on their team who will compete with students at other community colleges around the country in games including Valorant, Call of Duty, Madden NFL, NBA 2 K, FIFA Soccer, League of Legends, Fortnite, Overwatch, Rocket League and Hearthstone.

Joshua Montejano is on the AWC team and said the experience can’t be beat.

“I mean, what’s not to like?," Montejano said. "It’s fun. Being able to play competitively and have an area to just play and be allowed to hone our skills, it’s great.”

Buchtel said the team is full for the fall semester but interested students can email esports@azwestern.edu for the spring semester, when he hopes to double the team.
