NJCAA Sanctions Arizona Western College; Matadors Forced to Forfeit 5 Games

Courtesy AWC

Arizona Western College Matador Football team had 5 wins overturned by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). (Aired 10/21/13)

The NJCAA penalized the Matadors as the result of an audit that showed 2 players transfer documents had not been signed by their previous college.

AWC Athletic Director Jerry Smith says the two players in question were otherwise eligible.  He added that this was the college’s first NJCAA audit in 7 years.

AWC was ranked 10th nationally before their 7-to-2 record was downgraded to 2-to-7.

Matador football appealed to the NJCAA and received a waiver to remain eligible for the El Toro Bowl on December 7th.

Participants in the El Toro Bowl will be announced November 12th.

The team’s next game will be at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah on November 2nd.

KAWC's partners at AWC TV have interviews with head football coach Tom Minnick on their weekly program, The Bullring.  You can watch it on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on cable channel 74.
