Major Road Construction In Yuma Continues

Lou Gum

If you drove in Yuma today, you probably encountered some road construction.

KAWC’s Stephanie Sanchez spoke to the Arizona Department of Transportation for a look at some of the more than a dozen projects taking place around town.

Construction at the westbound Interstate 8 and Giss Parkway interchange began this week.

Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman Tom Herrmann said I-8 west bound ramps will remain closed until mid-June.

The 2.5 million dollar project will remove the traditional exit with a stop sign and construct a two-lane roundabout to accommodate commercial trucks and other large vehicles.

"The modern roundabout is a very good device. It’s been shown to reduce crashes and reduce wait times for people instead of coming to a stop," Herrmann said. "If there is nobody coming down the road, you just enter the roundabout and go on your way.”

Hermann said “Share the road” signs will be added to accommodate bicyclists.

The project is expected to be completed within 8 months.

Meanwhile, a project to widen a road at Avenue 3E and Highway 95 continues.

“We have limited highway 95 to one lane in each direction. First we’re working on the north side of the road and having drivers on the south side of the road," Herrmann said. "Within the next week, we’re going to change that and have drivers on north side of the while we repave and widen the south side of the road.”

Starting in June, Herrmann said another major project will begin at the interchange of I-8 and Araby road.

Roundabouts will be added at both exits on the north and south side of I-8.
