San Luis HS Dance to Put on Hip-Hop Dance Workshops

So you think you can dance?

The San Luis High School Dance Team, known as the Snake Charmers, are proud to present four Hip Hop Dance and Culture Master Workshops.

The event is set for Feb. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at San Luis High.

 
The cost for the full day is $65 if paid before Feb. 5 after which the price will increase to $85. There will also be an option to take a la carte workshops for $20 per session.

During the workshops, which are open to individuals 9 years of age and up, instructors will be exploring a variety of dance styles in the hip-hop realm, as well as the culture behind them.

“We want San Luis and Yuma to have the opportunity to experience something new and refreshing,” SLHS dance teacher Maria Salgado said. “We have four amazing teachers coming from Los Angeles and Phoenix.”

Biographical information on each instructor:

Randi "Rascal" Freitas is a professional dancer born and raised in the Bay Area and now living in Los Angeles, working as both a choreography dancer and a specialty freestyler. She is the newest member of The Beat Freaks. Randi has toured Japan performing in a theater show called “The Battle” and is currently the Associate Choreographer of the touring show, The Hip-Hop Nutcracker. She has performed on shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Ellen Show, The American Music Awards, The Kids Choice Awards and The Grammys, with companies such as Nike, Anthropologie, Toyota, Mountain Dew and AT&T, and artists such as Travis Scott, Kaytranada and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Edson “B-Boy House” Magana has more than 26 years of accomplishments and contributions to Arizona’s hip-hop community. With strong roots within hip-hop culture, the dance and foundations, Magana continues to be blessed with opportunities to compete, judge and host numerous dance competitions/battles, around the world. Representing proven and respected crews Furious Styles and Mighty Zulu Kingz, with that BreakLife longevity. His stage work has led him to a 29-city tour in Japan alongside The "Tap Dogs" as well as representing Team USA in Red Bulls London “Beat Battle,” New Zealand’s X-Air Games and in Germany for “Battle of the Year.” House has been part of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns Fast Breaker, WNBA’s Hip-Hop Squad, and the NaS, "I Can" music video. As an Arizona State University graduate with a B.A. in Psychology/Sociology, House is currently one of the hip-hop professors at the university.

G’bari “GQ” Gilliam is a dancer from the Bay Area. He moved to Los Angeles at 18 years old and began studying different street dance forms while he was at the University of California Los Angeles. Gilliam is a part of Versa-Style and has been training in styles such as whacking, house dance, and hip-hop, among other styles for more than seven years. He has won battles around the United States, and has competed internationally in these styles.

Kniin Micah Abbrey is an artist/choreographer and teacher with a concentration in Urban Improvisational Movement and Techniques (Freestyle/Street dance). He specializes in movement innovation and total body integration methodologies with an emphasis in musical aural skills and meditative approaches to movement in order to heighten creativity and self-awareness. He travels extensively internationally to urban arts communities, both to compete and teach his techniques. Additionally, he collaborates with various companies, including Embodiment Project, Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre and Groovaloos, to bring powerful, performative, creative and thought-provoking street dance to the dance theatre world.
