Yuma’s mayor says he’s running again.
Mayor Doug Nicholls announced on his social media accounts early Saturday morning that he filed papers to run for reelection in the election to be held on Aug. 2, 2022.
Nicholls said "it's been such an honor to serve the great people of Yuma as mayor. I would be additionally honored to continue serving this great community."
Nicholls, a deacon at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Yuma, began his second four-year term as Mayor in January 2018. In his current term he has been been interviewed by Fox News and other national news outlets on the rising number of migrants at the border, for which he declared a state of emergency for migrant releases into the community in April 2019. Nicholls has welcomed former President Donald Trump and U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham to the border, among other Republican elected officials and sheriffs. He also received complaints about his no vote on a city mask mandate in June 2020.
Yuma Councilwoman Karen Watts announced her candidacy for mayor last week.
