San Luis High School Assistant Principal Rob Jankowski

San Luis High School Assistant Principal Rob Jankowski was named the 2018-19 Arizona Interscholastic Association 6A Conference Athletic Director of the Year. He received the award during the Arizona Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (AIAAA) conference on Monday.

“I am very honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Jankowski, who has spent 13 years as an educator, coach and administrator in Yuma Union High School District.

While he transitioned from the Sidewinders athletics office to academics at San Luis High prior to the 2019-20 school year, Jankowski spent the previous five years representing Yuma as the 6A region representative, advocating on behalf of area schools and helping build a unique regional setup in partnership with three schools in Tucson. He was succeeded by David Barrios, who is in his first year as a San Luis administrator.

During Jankowski’s time in the athletic office, he grew girls sport participation in basketball, soccer and softball, and saw the school’s baseball team reach the state finals in 2016 and win numerous regional titles. The boys soccer team has reached the 6A playoffs each year and individual sports like cross country, tennis, wrestling, and track have had athletes qualify for state competition. Additionally, Jankowski started an Athletic Council on campus made up of student athletes with the intent of giving them a voice towards improving their athletic experience.

“Rob leads with the student in mind and is greatly respected by the faculty and staff,” SLHS Principal Lucky Arvizo said. “His dedication and commitment for making a difference in students’ lives is one of his great attributes.”

Prior to beginning his career in education, Jankowski wrestled collegiality at the University of Wisconsin Parkside where he was an NAIA National Champion at 133 lbs. in 2002 and an NCAA Division II All-American for three seasons. He was also an NCAA II Academic All-American in 2000, 2002, and 2003. He was inducted into the University of Wisconsin Parkside’s Athletic Hall of Fame last fall.
