May is National Bike Month and Arizona Western College has outlined a strategy to become a more bicycle-friendly campus as part of a citywide effort. KAWC’s Maya Springhawk Robnett reports…
The City of Yuma wants to become a more “Bike Friendly” community under the League of American Bicyclists standards.
Ben Behunin, Professor of Education at Arizona Western College and co-chair of the college’s Bicycle Friendly work group said he believes the Yuma area is a perfect place to be bike-friendly. “Any other place, you don’t cycle in the winter,” he pointed out. “Actually, we have a longer riding season here because you can ride nine months a year.”
AWC Dean of Students Mary Kay Harton said she hopes the citywide efforts will result in events like a Tour de Yuma or criterium racing. “It would be a great tourist attraction,” she explained. “Our ask is we want Yuma to be in the top ten cycling cities.”
The college’s plans include a campus map with bike lanes, a bike sharing program, and bike training at the college.
