Introduction of Antiquated Weapons Code Ordinance Postponed

City of Yuma
Yuma City Hall

The Yuma City Council postponed the introduction of an ordinance Wednesday night designed to update the city’s “antiquated” weapons code.  The code update was to match the city ordinance on weapons with recent changes in state law.

The Arizona Legislature has approved changes in recent sessions pre-empting some local authority on weapons regulation.  The city’s current code dates back to 1978, with references to weapons that are no longer in use.

Introducing an ordinance is the first step in the process toward possible approval.  But the proposal, regulating items down to bow and arrows, sling shots, crossbows and blow guns, goes too far according to Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls.

The Council asked the Police Department to take another look at the proposed ordinance, especially for “weapons” that could be used for fun in an enclosed backyard.  No date was set for the next review of the weapons code update.
