New Semester, New Faces: AWC Students Kick Off the School Year

Students returned to class at Arizona Western College, where campus leaders and student volunteers helped welcome them back for the fall semester.

“It’s the first day, we’re really excited.”

As colleges and universities across the state began the new school year, students spent the day picking up parking passes, setting up laptops, and getting ID photos taken for the semester ahead.

Joaquin Torres prepares for his first semester as a freshman, and shares he spent an hour in a class that doesn't begin until October.

A total of 4,591 students are enrolled this fall semester.

Jennifer Sotelo is majoring in broadcast media.

Gabriel Salazar is a Yuma resident.

“I’m actually here from Yuma and just chose AWC cause it’s close to home and my family is here. And I got good scholarships. I got the presidential, I got the ambassador, and then also have two other ones.”

Nadia Vargas begins her last semester as a college student.

Nadia Vargas is entering her fourth semester before she transfers to a University, and assures she's trying to stay focused.

"Nervous. Just the chills that you get in the first day of school, back to college a new era. Finally finishing my classes for the final semester so I'm pretty excited because I kind of have to lock in in a sense that I'm trying to make this a final semester for me to graduate."

Carmen Márquez is a Mexican-American journalist born and raised in Yuma. For almost a decade she worked in national TV and radio focusing on undocumented communities in the United States. She has produced documentary episodes for LWC Studios about Latina health (100 Latina Birthdays podcast.), worked with UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute and produced for various outlets including Latinus and Channel 4 News London.
