There’s a popular meme that once the calendar turns to October, even the most mild-mannered person brings out their ghoulish side for Halloween month.
That appeared to be true for many costumed characters doing cosplay at YumaCon at the Yuma Civic Center.
YumaCon organizer Lindsay Benacka said about 1,550 people attended the event Oct.2 and 3 with about 100 vendors and special guests, most from out of town who attend this and other “cons”, or conventions displaying comic books, costumes and pop culture memorabilia. The most famous con is the San Diego Comic Con, which has been held online the past two summers due to the pandemic.
On Sunday, Kai Massey from Yuma was dressed as Wattson from the video game Apex Legends and said she liked to see other fans who shared her interests.
“I really like this (event)," Massey said. "It really does bring people together and they can show their own uniqueness through their cosplay and it brings people with shared interests together.”
YumaCon also included esports from the Arizona Western College esports team, Live Action Role Play or LARP and table games including Pokemon and Dungeons and Dragons.
