Arizona state Rep. Joel John was in San Luis Saturday to meet with residents. Legislative District 4 includes south Yuma County.
Rep. John said he wanted to continue a dialogue from when he knocked on doors in San Luis during the 2020 campaign, speaking to residents in English and Spanish, including on border issues.
“I think in the community what they’re mostly concerned with is is making sure that if the Border Patrol, if the federal agencies are going to (release migrants) into the community, that there are resources for them,” John told KAWC at Taqueria La Sanluisina.
Before John, no Republican had served in LD4. John said he also heard from San Luis residents on improving the economy and education.
San Luis resident Baldo Martinez said he appreciated John addressing San Luis residents in Spanish, something Martinez said incumbents Charlene Fernandez and Geraldine Peten did not appear to do during the campaign. Fernandez won re-election, Peten did not.
"What got our attention was, in August, when the heat was at its strongest, (John) was going to door to door for his campaign and that showed us his humility and his desire to get to work," he said.
