YUHSD Nursing Students Earning Highest Marks in State

YUHSD

Yuma Union High School District nursing students have earned the highest average technical skills assessment score in the state for the fall semester and are earning their Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA) licenses at an unprecedented rate.

YUHSD students accumulated an average score of 80 on their technical skills assessments with a pass rate of 97 percent across 38 students at Cibola, Kofa and Gila Ridge. The average score was the highest in Arizona among the 11 school districts included in the state’s Career & Technical Education performance results report for the fall.

Cibola amassed the highest score in the state for a single school with an average score of 85 and 100 percent pass rate.

In addition to YUHSD students achieving high marks on their technical skills assessment, there have been 164 out of 167 total students earn their CNA license from the three schools since the start of the 2017-2018 school year. This group includes 29 students who earned their CNA license this fall.

Nursing is a comprehensive, two-year program under YUHSD CTE with students experiencing the passion of providing quality patient care in a variety of healthcare settings; performing personal care procedures including taking vital signs, transferring patients and providing therapeutic treatments and practicing health care techniques in a clinical environment using effective patient communication among other things. During the second year of the program students take part in 80 hours of supervised internship at a local care facility.

Currently, Kofa, Gila Ridge and Cibola offer nursing. However, beginning in January 2020, San Luis High School will launch its nursing program.
