A long journey to the base of the mountains in Utah is certainly symbolic of the journey the Arizona Western Men’s Soccer Program has taken since the program’s inception in 1996.

With the help of two penalty kicks, a stellar second half goal, excellent defense, and a few great saves, Arizona Western is District Champions for the first time.

The 18th ranked Arizona Western Matadors knocked off the previously unbeaten and third ranked Salt Lake City Bruins 3-1 Friday afternoon at the Zions Bank Stadium.

A goal in the final minute of the second overtime period decided the Region I Women's Championship as the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (12-5-3) finished an incredible playoff run in heartbreaking fashion to the Paradise Valley Pumas (14-4-3) at Paradise Valley Community College Saturday.

Paola Sanchez set up Yulissa Rascon-Bandilla in the 110th minute, with just seconds to spare before penalty kicks, lifting the Pumas to their second consecutive Region I Championship.

The Lady Matadors sophomore experience earned three All-Conference selections and a pair of All-Region honors, the conference and region announced Sunday.

Melissa Garciglia Banuelos, who led the team in kills and ranks second in the conference, is a first team member of both the ACCAC and Region I. Garciglia Banuelos amassed 357 kills in 29 matches for the Matadors, the only Mat to appear in every contest this season. She also broke the school record for aces in a season with 64, leading the conference by a wide margin.
